OSX LION/Safari QuickTime plugin failure. A solution.

The other day using Safari as my browser on a iMac with the latest version of Lion installed, I visited a web site that had an embedded QuickTime video, demonstrating  a piece of software that I was interested in.

The problem started when the video did not show up, just an empty space with the words 'Plug in failure. I started to search the net, and found that a lot of other people using Lion and Safari were having the same problem.

Well for me and I hope for some of you as well, I have found a solution to the problem. However this solution will only work if you have 3ivx on your machine.

First go to Settings and have a look at the bottom line and see if 3ivx is installed. If it is go to your Applications folder and find the 3ivx folder, it will be near the top of the list. Open the folder and inside you will find an uninstall package for 3ivx. Use the uninstall program to get rid of 3ivx.

Once you have done that, I would suggest that you run verify and repair permissions, but you may find all will be well without doing that.

Open Safari and return to the site you were having problems with, you should now find that the QuickTime video will be there and you will be able to play it.

For some reason upgrading to Lion and the latest version of Safari has caused a conflict with 3ivx, causing the QuickTime plugin to malfunction. I hope that for some of you with this problem the above helps.

David may become my new favourite !!

A new teacher was trying to make use of her psychology courses.  She started her class by saying, 'Everyone who thinks they're stupid, stand up!' After a few seconds, Little David stood up.  The teacher said, 'Do you think you're stupid, David?'  'No, ma'am, but I hate to see you standing there all by yourself!'

John watched, fascinated, as his mother smoothed cold cream on her face.  'Why do you do that, mommy?' he asked.  'To make myself beautiful,' said his mother, who then began removing the cream with a tissue.  'What's the matter, asked David 'Giving up?'

The math teacher saw that David wasn't paying attention in class.  She called on him and said, 'David!  What are 2 and 4 and 28 and 44?'  David quickly replied, 'NBC, FOX, ESPN and the Cartoon Network!'

David's kindergarten class was on a field trip to their local police station where they saw pictures tacked to a bulletin board of the 10 most wanted criminals.  One of the youngsters pointed to a picture and asked if it really was the photo of a wanted person.  'Yes,' said the policeman.  'The detectives want very badly to capture him.  David asked,"Why didn't you keep him when you took his picture ? "

Little David attended a horse auction with his father.  He watched as his father moved from horse to horse, running his hands up and down the horse's legs and rump, and chest.  After a few minutes, David asked, 'Dad, why are you doing that?'  His father replied, 'Because when I'm buying horses, I have to make sure that they are healthy and in good shape before I buy.  David, looking worried, said, 'Dad, I think the UPS guy wants to buy Mom ....'

Wind turbines can't cope with UK weather as 3 more blown to pieces | Mail Online

Wrecked by gales again as windfarms get £300,000 to switch off...in high winds

  • 15ft-long turbine blades flew off three structures in 112mph winds
  • Concerned villagers fear someone could have been killed

First there were the wind farms that had to be shut down if it got a bit blowy.

Then there was the turbine that burst into flames in a gale a month ago.

And now three turbines have been wrecked in the latest bout of rough weather – sweeping away any remaining illusions that strong winds simply mean more electricity being generated.

Danger: The firm which made these damaged turbines in the Hepworth and Upper Cumberworth areas of Huddersfield has promised a full investigation after villagers saw blades being flung off in high winds

One of them stands – rather forlornly now – off a country road called Windmill Lane.
The damage raises yet more questions about the ability of such machines to cope with serious weather, let alone produce very much electricity.

Adding to such concerns will be the revelation yesterday that wind farms in Scotland were paid nearly £300,000 in the first five days of this year to close down because it was too windy.

The three damaged turbines all stand within a mile of one another in the countryside around Huddersfield, West Yorkshire.

The one in Windmill Lane in the village of Upper Cumberworth lost one of its three blades, and another in the same village lost two.

A third, in nearby Hepworth, lost all three, with debris blown across a road into a neighbouring property.

The damage occurred on Thursday night when, according to the Met Office wind speeds near Huddersfield peaked at 77mph during fierce storms which felled trees, tore off roof tiles and damaged power cables.

Local residents say the falling blades could have injured or killed someone as they were flung to the ground.

Frances Barnes, who has ten acres of grazing land for horses nearby, said: ‘It is worrying. People objected to the plans when they first went in – not because it is a windmill but because it is so close to a busy road.

The blades on the 12 metre mast are over two metres long and one flew across a road.

The blades on the mast are 15ft long and one was blown right across a road

‘It is frightening to think what may have happened had one of the blades flown into the road and hit a car, or indeed if the wind turbine had come down.’

The 10kw turbines were made by Evoco, which says they have been through a ‘four-year period of in-house testing’.

The company, which claimed on its website they could ‘withstand harsh winters and wind speeds in excess of 90mph’ has begun an investigation.

The turbines are not part of a wind farm but sold individually to landowners to generate their own electricity and sell any excess back to the National Grid.

The company said it had installed 100 turbines in the area and all have been ‘braked’ so that they stop spinning until modifications are made.

A spokesman said: ‘We have recently experienced a series of turbine faults in a localised area of rural West Yorkshire area during record-breaking high winds.

‘Evoco turbines have recently weathered three lots of hurricane force winds, in which the overwhelming majority of our turbines have operated without any problems.

‘No one was hurt in the incidents, which are being investigated thoroughly. Health and safety issues are of primary importance to us, and we work to rigorous standards to maintain our excellent record.’

Christine Smith, a local Conservative councillor said: ‘This shows they can be very dangerous, these blades could have fallen on someone’s car or home. They are lucky someone was not walking nearby.

‘Wind turbines are flawed, they don’t work when it’s too windy, and don’t work when it’s not windy enough. There are much better alternatives to use less energy such as under-floor heating and insulation.

Last month a 300ft wind turbine in Ardrossan, North Ayrshire, Scotland, exploded into flames when it was buffeted by high winds

Fiery: Last month a 300ft wind turbine in Ardrossan, Ayrshire, exploded into flames when it was buffeted by high winds

‘These companies are putting in applications left, right and centre, and telling people they can make a lot of money out of them, but I think we need to look at some of these concerns before allowing any more to be built.’

Last month a 300ft turbine in Ardrossan, North Ayrshire, erupted in flames during gales of 165mph. It was said to have been switched off, but had a ‘brake system failure’.

In Scotland the £300,000 payments over the first five days of this year were shared by four turbine operators.

The controversial ‘constraint payments’ were made because they produced more energy than the National Grid could handle and had to shut down.

Up to 32,000 wind turbines could be built in England and Wales over the next 40 years to meet government targets.

Last year 17 wind farm operators were paid £7million to shut down on 40 occasions between January and September.

@Matt, Cornwall, 9:23, In Germany wind power produces 11%.............................................We have much stronger winds than the Germans which can destroy a wind turbine. Just had a chicken korma last night.

A number of aircraft have crashed due to engine failure and other problems, killing thousands of people. Therefore ALL aircraft represent a waste in investment and a technology that should be scrapped. Same logic! I would point out that France has more wind turbines than the UK (as has Germany, Denmark and many other countries.) During the recent storms in France with incredibly high winds not a single turbine was destroyed or damaged. - The History Man, France, 07/1/2012 08:49 What a load of absolute tosh!! for gods sake stop presuming facts no aircraft engines have killed anyone statements like this only show your infantile logic..these so called wind generators are a very political thing and both can certainly be associated with pontificating insincerely or without regard of facts or the truth. The amount of money that is being wasted on these desperate contrivances is alarming when the development of other green devices would give a bigger reward...but no one is listening

The difference ZEDBEADSBED, the turbines are erected with MY money without my permission. Still it will only cost a million££ each to repair. (Until the next breakdown) It s not their money so they are not worried. They are useless but alot of people are making a lot of OUR money with them.

Planning guidance says that the safe distance from a turbine is the height plus 10%. That's clearly not the case as the photos prove. Debris travells a lot further. Time for the government to revise planning guidance?

I think the more wind turbines the better. We need a mix of energy sources to supply us in the future and we cant keep relying on imported oil and gas, its only going to get more expensive and like it or not it will run out. If we don't shore up our own home grown energy you will be the first ones complainging when your lights go out - sound dramatic? That's what will happen, if any of you had the faintest idea what you were talking about you would know that. I work in the energy industry so I actually know what I'm talking about not like some of the hysterical comments left on here so far.

A Very Merry Christmas to All & a Peaceful New Year

File

Well it is now fast approaching that time of year again. The frantic scramble to find the decorations, and all the testing to see if the Christmas lights will work without causing a major household fire.

Having got that all under control, thoughts move on to the Christmas shopping, and of what presents to buy for everybody. Lists are made, and no I don't mean the naughty or nice lists. I mean the endless lists of what you are going to require to make the big day a success.

By the time all that is sorted out tempers are usually frayed around the edges, the children, husband ,wife  whoever, have been shouted at and have all been reduced to tears, at least the kids have.

By the time Christmas Eve has arrived most wives at least, are shattered, Dad has finished putting up the tree and decorations, and with a bit of luck has not caused himself so many injuries that a trip to the hospital is required, in my case as I was born accident prone those chances are very high.

Then, come what may the Day is upon us, and by hook or by crook all will enjoy it. Perhaps the children most of all.

Well that is how it is supposed to work out anyway, but in a lot of places it just does not seem to happen like that.

Wars and famines still take place all over the world. Families, even in the supposedly most affluent countries find the going very hard at this time of year, just trying to make ends meet and give their loved ones as good a time as they can, even if it does mean going into a debt spiral they may not recover from.

Sounds a bit gloomy and Dickensian  when you think of things like that doesn't it, but that's life I suppose, just a bit too real, and something that perhaps should cross your mind, if only to say to yourself  ' There but for the Grace of God or good fortune go I '.

I am not a religious person in any way, but for some reason I do believe in Christmas and the Christmas Spirit, and I try to impart that feeling to others with varying amounts of success. Perhaps it would be good to do that the rest of the year as well, but at Christmas it just seems a little easier to do. Perhaps that is the Magic of Christmas. Maybe that is a little of what this time of year is for.

The most important part, for those of you that believe, is the birth of Christ the Lord. That in my view gets a bit lost in all the Christmas celebrations these days. Even though I am an atheist, I still feel a pang of sadness over that.

However, where ever you are, who ever you are, and to those of you who may not be so fortunate this year, I wish you all well. I hope that if you have any problems they may be sorted out for you in the days to come.

I wish you all a Very Happy, Healthy and Peaceful Christmas, and New Year.

Oh yes, one more thing, apart from remembering to put out the stockings, milk and cookies.

For all of you that are of a Faith may your God take care of you and protect you and your families in all the lonely places you may have to walk.

It is a shame that we rush headlong into this new tech, more often than not because we can rather than asking ourselves if we should. Also check out her site regarding the huge number of bird deaths caused each year by wind turbines.
